Our FINTOPIA trip powered by GHOST starts in Helsinki on the campus of Maria 01, where we will learn how investors, corporates and start-ups are working towards the future of Europe’s largest startup campus. Afterwards we will meet purpose-driven founders in the Startup-Sauna of Aalto University. Afterwards we leave the city, directly into the wilderness of the Nuuksio National Park, where we dive into nature for two extraordinary days to feel our own presence with all five senses: making fire, hiking, fishing and of course in the sauna. Finnish nature is the perfect way to find the peace we need to track down our true purpose: for us and our businesses. On our walk through nature, we will organize the first unconference in the forests of Finland at several stations. The PURPOSEDIARY will accompany us, so that at the end we can develop our personal vision from our experiences, discussions and reflections in a concluding workshop.

„If you want to improve the organization, you have to improve yourself and the organization gets pulled up with you.” Indra Nooyi

FINTOPIA is neither a startup safari nor a business trip. FINTOPIA is a new mixture of outdoor workshop, pilgrimage and unconference. In the middle of the land of the world champions of happiness. Together with a fine and small group of people who have the common goal to find their destination and to develop sustainable visions for their companies, we will set off on our journey. Instead of looking for the sense of digitization in Silicon Valley or Tel Aviv, we will go to the places that let us think about our future in tranquility. The forest experience offers us the atmosphere to find our destination in absolute silence. The ability to be quiet together is a strong form of trust. The rough wilderness has made the Finns thoughtful people. They don’t talk much, but when they do, they mean it. We want to be inspired by this.

“Restore connection is not just for devices, it is for people too. If we cannot disconnect, we cannot lead.” Arianna Huffington

Whenever we discuss the sense and purpose of digitization, the term purpose is quickly used. It is the new buzzword and collective term for everything that has nothing to do with future but technology. But what is purpose exactly? We moved out to find out. And we found it high in the north. In Finland, the number 1 in the UN World Happiness Report 2018. Finns love technology, but they find happiness elsewhere: in the connection to nature. While other advisors read to determine their purpose, Finns put on a pair of rubber boots and go into the forest. And that’s exactly where we want to go with you to learn from the best in purpose #rolemodels. Together with our Finnish friends from GHOST we want to find out how to find your purpose in a radically changing world: Who are we? Why do we exist? What do we believe in? What do we want to fight for? Why do we get up in the morning and go to work? Why do people want to live and work with us? The purpose is always more than just earning money. Whoever has found his purpose brings passion and drive into his life and into the company he works for. A strong transformational purpose is the key anchor in a digital age of dramatic change. So what is your purpose in life? #stubbornonvision #flexibleondetails

„Work takes on new meaning when you feel you are pointed in the right direction. Otherwise, it’s just a job, and life is too short for that.” Tim Cook

The sauna plays a special role in Finland’s cultural traditions. It is an absolute must to experience the true nature of the sauna – the cleansing act through the use of Vihta. Vitha is a bundle of birch branches bundled with natural material. This tradition is particularly cultivated in summer, when fresh birch branches and leaves are available everywhere. Once you have made it to the Finnish sauna and hold a vihta in your hands, you can gently beat yourself with this object until your skin is red and smells like summer forest. Why? It promotes blood circulation – an absolute must when thinking and also during the midsummer celebration!

If the heat in the sauna becomes too intense, it is quite acceptable to demand a sudden (a term that means penalty kick in ice hockey) – a cooling break from sweating. Basically, there are three different variants of jäähy: First you have to jump into a nearby river or lake, second you have to walk naked into the icy embrace of a snow pile or third, you are lucky, and you can cool off with a relaxed conversation, cool air and a beer in your hands. It is important to scream your heart out of your lungs during the jäähy – be it out of pain, excitement or joie de vivre.

This fascinating sport, in which a man literally carries his wife through a special competition course with obstacles, has existed since the beginning of the 19th century. In order to live up to tradition, Sonkajärvi has been hosting the World Women’s Carrying Championships every year since 1992. The team that manages the prescribed course in the shortest possible time becomes World Champion.

In a country where many of its inhabitants are passionate fans of hard rock and heavy metal, it may come as no surprise that the annual Air Guitar World Championships take place as part of the Oulu Music Video Festival in Northern Finland. The first edition of the competition was meant as a joke. But the competition became so popular that the festival now manages an official network of air guitar world championships. Speaking of popularity, the network is currently present in over 20 countries! For those who are not familiar with the noble art of air guitar playing, imagine a guitar that doesn’t exist. Imagine playing the greatest guitar solo of all time and winning the hearts of the audience and the votes of the jury.
