Transformation is:

Transformation is a process of alignment. When all components are aligned to a new paradigm and completely in sync again, a system (i.e. an individual, a company, or a society) has been transformed. Change, on the other hand, is a state of 'disruption', which means that one component of the system is no longer in sync with the rest, thus disrupting the synchronous flow of the whole system. If this change is sustained, it may be the beginning of a transformation. However, it must remain stable, even though the system will try to return to its previous synchronous state by trying to undo the change rather than changing other elements as well. Companies, social movements, and individuals don't usually struggle to initiate change. They fail to maintain the changed component against resistance and to align the rest of the system behind the change. An example: Going to the gym once is easy. Changing your daily routine, eating habits, and mindset to align with an active lifestyle is difficult. Or, developing a corporate vision and strategy document is not rocket science. Understanding what that vision really means, down to the implications for the most mundane processes such as meeting scheduling, information flows, leave policies, and aligning every structure around a new set of values, is an incredibly complex (and usually exhausting) endeavor.
